TRANSPORT
Children who live outwith two miles from
school are entitled to free school transport. The school will arrange
this. Children who have access to a bus route but are within the distance
limit or live outwith the catchment may be granted a ‘privileged lift’
provided that there is space on the bus and there is no additional cost to
Scottish Borders Council. Good behaviour is expected on school transport.
Persistent offenders may have bus passes withdrawn.
If children cycle to school there is a
covered bicycle shelter. Bikes should not be ridden in the playground. We
strongly recommend the wearing of cycle helmets and suggest that children
bring a lock to secure their bike

PARKING
We are very short of parking spaces
around the school. Please do not park outside the school unless there is
an authorised place or it is an emergency. I have been told by the Police
that parking on the pavement is an offence and parking 10 metres from the
corner is also an offence. There is a car park further along Crofts
Road from the school.
Please do not park in the Sheltered
Housing area as the parking bays are only for residents and visitors.

ROAD SAFETY POLICY
Introduction
Road accidents are the single biggest
threat of death or injury facing children. The aim of the Schools Road
Safety Policy is to reduce risk. The objectives are set out below:
The Curriculum
Ø
Road safety education will
be delivered through the curriculum as part of the 5-14 Curriculum
guidelines and in particular as part of the Health Education Guidelines
Ø Road safety education will
be included within staff training. Road Safety Officers will be invited
to work in partnership with staff to develop road safety into the
curriculum
Ø
The school will support
practical training schemes linked to the curriculum such as cycle training
and pedestrian skills training
Ø
The school will support
the Junior Road Safety Officers Scheme to encourage pupils to take an
active role in road safety promotion
Ø
The school will take an
active role in the promotion of a Safer Routes to School policy
Parents
Ø Parents will accept
responsibility for parking both safely and appropriately around the school
and when picking up and dropping off their children
Ø Parents should help their
child identify a safer route to school and encourage them to use it
Ø
Parents can make a
significant contribution to children’s road safety education at the school
by assisting class teachers with pedestrian skills training and by helping
them to train older pupils to cycle safely through the Scottish Cycle
Training scheme
Journeys
Ø The school will encourage
walking, cycling and the use of school transport for the journey to school
to reduce traffic congestion around the school
Ø
The school will encourage
all cyclists to wear cycle helmets, high visibility clothing and during
poor weather and darker winter days, lights on bicycles
Ø
All teachers/parents
driving council minibuses will have completed an assessment by the council
on their suitability to drive these vehicles
Management of the Policy
Ø
Parents will be kept
informed of the progress of the road safety policy and are invited to
contribute ideas for action
Ø
The Headteacher and School
Board will review the policy on an annual basis.
